Engineering Design
Yuksel Domanic Engineering Limited holds a leading place and is immensely involved in transportation engineering consultancy in Turkey. As such starting from the date of foundation, the company have had the experience of:
- Transportation engineering, highway planning, master planning, corridor and feasibility studies,
- Over 1200 km of design of urban and rural highways as well as freeways and motorways,
- The same for over 1000 km of railways,
- Over 500 no’s of bridges and viaducts of various spans and sizes,
- About 20 no’s of tunnels,
- Numerous major interchanges and intersections.
HIGHWAY and INTERCHANGE DESIGN
Yuksel Domanic Engineering Limited may not be the company who designed the largest number of highways, but surely is a pioneering one of this field in the country.
Starting with planning, feasibility projecting, traffic engineering analysis, continuing with reconnaissance works, field surveying and geotechnical studies, up to final design we are proud in having contributed to the understanding of problem, scope definition and developing the design habits. As such, we don't hesitate in declaring to have received a full appreciation and recognition of the high quality achieved which deeply motivates us and made our company a lucky one in this field.
Brief information about completed and/or ongoing highway design projects can be found in “Highway” section.
RAILWAY DESIGN
Yuksel Domanic Engineering Limited had gained a considerable experience in railway design, and is presently in charge of engineering design of two vital railway projects as follows:
- The engineering design of Ankara-Izmir railway
- The engineering design of Kars-Tbilisi Railway
A 3-D simulation video of the Ankara-Izmir railway can be found in "Media" section.
BRIDGE DESIGN
Yuksel Domanic Engineering Limited designed over 500 bridges of various sizes until present time. These include many crossings of the most defiant rivers in the country such as Sakarya and Coruh.
The company had supplied consultancy to the Bridge Department of KGM, and as such had supervised many of the highway bridge designs produced in the country between 1997-2004.
Additionally, the seismic retrofit design works of a total amount of 144 bridges in Istanbul is presently under the supervision of our company, in conformity with AASHTO, CALTRANS and FEMA specifications. The client of the bridge retrofitting project is General Directorate of Highways.
Our ongoing highway and motorway projects includes design of numerous bridges of various length, with a considerable number of very challenging and demanding ones among them.
The company is currently in charge of the design of a motorway connection road between Edirne and Pazarkule (Turkey-Greece border gate) which includes a bridge with a span of approximately 400 meters. Alternatives of types for this bridge has been introduced to the Client, presently the highest preference being placed on a cable stayed one.
TUNNEL DESIGN
It may be surprising that modern highway tunnel design and construction is a rather newly developing field in our country, of which roads pass through rough and difficult terrain. As such, Yuksel Domanic Limited is among the few companies who completed highway tunnel designs and have qualification for such work.
Yuksel Domanic Engineering Limited designed over 20 tunnels until present time. The list of the designs of modern highway tunnels, which we have completed, is given in “Tunnels” section. Following pages demonstrates some sample design drawing examples, site views and photographs of the Camburnu Tunnel, which is located at the Arakli-Cayeli section of Black sea Costal Highway.
Also, the company is presently in charge of construction supervision and consultancy of two tunnels in Van and Bitlis, with lengths of 2km each.
AIRPORT, PORT and MARINE STRUCTURES, SHORE PROTECTION and RIVER ENGINEERING DESIGNS
We neither regard nor intend that the following list of completed studies in various other fields constitute only a short digression from our relatively long list of highway design activities:
In 1995 we have undertaken and completed the design of rehabilitation of Mersin Port, its access routes and intraport transportation facilities. This rehabilitation study of one of the greatest ports of Turkey was awarded by the State Directorate of Harbor and Airport Construction.
Following the a.m study Yuksel Domanic Limited was awarded by the same directorate also the Feasibility Study and Preliminary Design of Mersin Main Container Port. With a quay length of over 2500 meters, the study and preliminary design including the sea bed borings and other geotechnical investigations of this important infrastructure by the side of existing Mersin Port and close to the Mersin free zone was successfully completed and submitted in one year.
Shore protection was an important subject of consideration in our Arakli-Rize-Cayeli Costal Divided Highway Project. Blacksea is a defiant one in respect of destructive waves, incurring serious damage almost each year to miles of lengths of costal roads, harbours, breakwaters or nearby facilities.
Yet the strict constraints was such that we were to locate the alignment just by the sea side or, sometimes, just through it over a total length of more then 30 kilometers. The need for a careful protection design was clear and that is what we have achieved thanks to our experienced specialists. Our success has been put to proof just next year (1999) by the fiercely attacking waves all along the constructed sections of the highway more than 6 kilometers in length, where the result was more than satisfactory.
Just similarly, embankment slopes and bridge pears of our ongoing motorway projects shall be under serious threat of nearby river flood runoffs expected to exceed 500 cubic meters per second. Thus a very careful consideration of frequency analysis and water profile constructions, sediment and scour computations combined with water impact and damage assessment for the proper protection and/or river regulation design works emerges as a necessity which we have already started equipped with the state of art utilities such as HEC packages and other similar soft wares.
Yuksel Domanic Engineering Limited has also completed the design including the shop drawings, field surveying and supervision of the Malatya Erhac Airport rehabilitation works, which also makes a subject matter for the following article.
